Testing the AMSOIL Powersports Coolant

Yesterday we posted about the new AMSOIL PSAF Powersports Coolant swap on a 2019 CAN-AM Defender Max Lone Star.  Last night, we hit the trails to put it to the test to see how it performed and if there was any noticeable differences in temps.

On Thursday evening, 11 Mar 2021, we took the UTV out to the trails.  This still had the dealer installed coolant in it.

Last night, we went out on the same trail, this time with the new coolant installed.

Observation:

Does it run cooler - perhaps!  There isn't a digital gauge with numerical temperature readings, so we can only go by the digital display with a bar graph style temperature display.  The temps seemed to stabilize at about the same point as the OEM coolant, however, it appeared the fan cycled less often, and on average, the temperature gauge ran about 1 bar less than last week.  On our way back out of the trails, the temps appeared even cooler, with only about 2-3 bars displaying instead of 4-6 bars.  Because the temps were cooler, than fan didn't cycle as often and removed off until after we made it back to the garage, and let it sit idle for a few minutes (good practice after working the machine).  This is normal as there is no air running across the radiator to help keep the coolant cooler.   While letting the machine idle, the fan came on but it didn't stay on for as long as it did before, or it didn't seem that way.  The temp gauge appeared to drop a bit sooner than what I'm used to seeing with the old coolant.

What does all of this mean?

In our opinion, the AMSOIL Powersports Coolant did keep the UTV running cooler, but there was no "scientific" approach.  However, our observations does appear to match that of the benefits as featured by AMSOIL:

COOLS HOT-RUNNING ENGINES

- Ethylene-glycol formulation provides excellent heat transfer
- Helps prevent
metal engine parts from overheating and expanding beyond tolerances
- Provides boil-over protection of up to 226°F (108°C) to keep engines protected in the toughest riding conditions

Additional Benefits:

KEEPS ENGINES CLEAN

LONG-LIFE FORMULATION

- Provides a long five-year service life
- Borate-, nitrite- and phosphate-free
- Reduces time spent on maintenance

EXCELLENT COMPATIBILITY

- Optimized to protect the metals found in powersports cooling systems, including increased aluminum
- Compatible with copper and bronze/brass alloys and most common hose and gasket materials
- Helps prevent
deterioration and leaks
- Compatible with most other coolants

Summertime Test

We can't wait for summer!!!  We have plans to put this machine to the test, the ultimate test for New Mexico summertime temperatures.  While we won't have an IR Temperature gun, we will try to keep a close eye on how it's performing and report back on a later blog post.

COST

I know this is what drives most folks to a certain product.  So when considering the costs, consider the benefits as well.  However, the retail cost is on par with what the local dealer charges per quart for the OEM fluid.  When you consider the benefits of becoming a Preferred Customer, the cost per quart is approximately 27% less.
